Midtown Toronto embraced Birch Bistro when it opened in the Mount Pleasant area last year. The 70-seat bistro is neighbourhood savvy, serving classic French cuisine in a refined setting. Housed in a former bank, the roomy interior is bright and airy with floor-to-ceiling windows and a 12-ft. raw edge chef’s table. A 1901 Heintzman piano, lovely antique pieces and burgundy banquettes grace the room. The wine list, curated by owner Laurie Hillesheim, a certified sommelier, offers every bottle by the glass.
The space, available for full buy out, is ideal for sit-down dinners and cocktail receptions. In season, a beautiful patio terrace seats 40 under a retractable awning. Order off the traditional French-fare menu or work with chef Oliver Kjeldsen to customize. Spectacular is a collection of signature desserts created by pastry chef Calvin Wat. Hand-sculpted in the shape of fruits and nuts, the eye-popping, colourful chocolate shells are filled with a corresponding flavourful mousse, ganache and other treats. The desserts are also available for catering order.
