Popular Event Venue Launches New Look

After a $2-million renovation, Dynamic Hospitality’s Pavilion Royale is set to reopen next month with a new look and name, the Grand Metropolitan of Mississauga. The extensive refurbishment of the popular special event venue is noticeable from the exterior, where a towering 50-ft. high marquee now shelters the entryway, and beyond, with a newly installed glass-enclosed elevator in the lobby providing easy access to the second floor.

On the main level, a new 4,000 sq. ft. patio extends the 250-seat Courtyard Ballroom with an outdoor entertaining area, beautifully landscaped with water features and lounge furnishings. Easily tentable, the garden oasis is ideal for outdoor ceremonies and cocktail receptions. In the second-floor Starlight Ballroom, a dazzling chandelier (40,000 crystals!) suspended beneath the skylight ceiling, is among the changes adding undeniable elegance to the 450-seat space.

Game On With Smartphone Event App

The new GamifyApp for smartphones is a game changer when it comes to engaging event attendees. Developed by EventMobi, a creator of interactive mobile event apps, Gamify allows planners to build and customize games that integrate educational or sponsor information, and networking.

By downloading the Gamify app to their smartphone or tablet device, attendees are able to scan QR codes or type in pass codes as they walk a trade show floor or attend conference sessions. The codes give them access to quizzes, scavenger hunt challenges and interactive tasks that, upon completion, award points and virtual badges. The app also lets attendees track their progress and ranking on a leader board, with top scorers winning rewards. For exhibitors, the win is in increased foot traffic and customer data.

Candid Event Photography

A 20-year career in hotel food and beverage gives photographer Jerry Lem an insider’s perspective when he has his camera trained on event action. “Anticipating the shot, and staying incognito, is easy when you’re familiar with how events unfold,” says Lem. His company, Social Shutter Photography, specializes in reportage and candid style photography for corporate and social events.

A peek at Social Shutter Photograpy’s blog site reveals Lem’s distinctive style for capturing shots, from sporting events to corporate and charity gatherings, that are natural, fun and uncontrived. Services are contracted based on an hourly fee and include all of the photos Lem takes on a CD/DVD with digital rights granted to the client to use and print off unlimited quantities.
