Hey event peeps — what do you do with an event’s floral décor once a venue empties and tear down begins? Switch up past practices to an awesome option by donating the florals to The Violet Heart Project. Founded late last year by a group of top-industry pros, the registered not-for-profit organization picks up event florals, restyles them into smaller arrangements, and re-donates them with a delivery the following day to hospitals, hospices and long-term care facilities.
“We work in a very waste-ridden industry, unfortunately,” says co-founder Julie Danaylov of A2D2 ~ Aerial Dance Cirque Co. “The Violet Heart Project gives us –- venues, event organizers and suppliers, sponsors, even brides and grooms — the opportunity to not only pay it forward, but to also further an event’s floral life with an eco-friendly solution. It’s a win-win for everybody.” There is a fee, which is channeled back into the VHP’s operating costs including event site pick-up, restyling labour, and end-destination delivery. The now twice-enjoyed florals are then recollected for proper composting. In return, donors receive a downloadable email banner recognition, a contribution acknowledgement letter and photos of the floral delivery for sharing on social media. Says Danaylov: “The smiles of the recipients are so worth it!”
