Like all good planners you keep your skills polished on the job and in the classroom. Well here's one education session you won't want to miss: Canadian FundRaiser's Mastering the Art of Special Events, a three-day Key-To-The-Sector workshop in Toronto, January 24-26, 2006 (Location TBD). Packed with essential information, innovative brainstorming ideas and insider tips on event management, the program will appeal to a broad planning audience, including seasoned pros. But what gives this session kick is workshop leader, master fundraiser/planner extraordinaire Hala Bissada, CFRE, Ryerson University's teacher of event fundraising and creator of some of Toronto's most successful charity events including the Teddy Bear Affair for the Children's Aid Foundation and the Sick Kids Foundation's gala, An Enchanted Evening. Bissada promises the course will be intensely creative and information-driven with different teaching techniques including classroom-style learning, group discussion, guest speakers, case study work and hands-on training. The last half-day will be held at the Liberty Grand with participants walking through all the on-site elements of setting up an event followed by a networking cocktail reception. While the focus is on charity events, Bissada notes that the knowledge is transferable to corporate planning. Course highlights include: concept development and design, strategic planning and budgeting, volunteer and risk/crisis management, sponsorship prospecting and stewardship, event production, on-site fundraising ideas including auctions, casinos and raffles, event marketing and media, and database management. Along with a creative-juice jumpstart, participants receive a Resource Kit filled with materials such as working templates, sample letters, proposals, reports and handy reference sources including a 2005-06 copy of TSEvents Resource Directory and subscriptions to Canadian Event Perspective magazine and Canadian FundRaiser, the course's media sponsors. Other course sponsors and guest lecturers include UnxVision, a telefundraising/marketing firm, Leslee Bell of Décor & More, Rob Sandolowich of Westbury National Show Systems, and Rob Rosset of Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex. Participants with specific questions, case studies or issues they'd like addressed during the training should submit them in advance. Register before November 21st for the early bird rate of $967 plus GST; $1,167 plus GST afterwards. For detailed information and to register, visit Key-To-The-Sector Training at www.canadianfundraiser.com or call seminar manager Mary Singleton (416) 267-1287.
