Let Them Eat Cake

Luscious frosting and all things themed make cakes by Monika Bakes dessert table standouts. Graphic artist-cum-cake master Monika Faltejsek draws upon her knowledge of colours, textures and images to translate a story or event theme into a delicious sugar-frosted medium. “People are stunned not only by the beauty and originality of the cakes, but that they can eat everything!” notes Faltejsek of the yummy detailing and clever ornamentation.

The edible art is available in several flavour pairings including an orange-flavoured sponge cake with orange-zested chocolate fudge fondant. Orders require minimum of two weeks notice. Contact 905-693-1470. Website coming soon.

Events To Feed A Community

Take group events to a new level of community awareness by tapping into The Stop, one of Canada’s first food banks. The Toronto-based not-for-profit group operates two locations with commercial kitchens — The Stop Food Centre and The Stop's Green Barn at Artscape Wychwood Barns —and offers a variety of events including team building, catering and fine dining.

Get groups involved, either as volunteer kitchen crew or diners, through the monthly Food For Change dinner series. Chef Chris Brown (Perigree) leads participants in the full day prep and service of a five-course meal to paying diners in the Green Barn’s lovely greenhouse. Private culinary team building, from Iron Chef-style competitions to healthy cooking, are also available. All proceeds are funneled back into The Stop’s community initiatives.

History Meets Green At New Centre

Art Deco is alive and well with the opening of the new AllStream Centre at Exhibition Place. Located in the circa-1929 Automotive Building, the 160,000 sq. ft. facility preserves the historical landmark’s classic architecture and ornamentation throughout its new ballroom- and meeting-centric space. Fully powered by renewable energy and green efficient, the venue meets Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’s silver certification (LEED).

Soaring 30-ft ceilings give lofty appeal to the spacious main floor ballroom with entertaining capacity for up to 3,000. The room is divisible in two. Sleek lounges and 20 meeting rooms for groups ranging up to 750 people reside on level two with window views overlooking the lake. An underground walkway connects to nearby Direct Energy Centre.
